I was going to add variable mass weapons to the list. More blatant in that movie than in others. Every once matters so pack up two gattlin guns per flight. As well as the portable machine gun Steve Bechimimi used. But lock up the 9mm.
It's bad enough he butchers science and logic, but he butchers literary devices as well. Countdowns are exciting, that's half the reason microwave ovens are so popular you get a countdown before dinner, but starting the 14 minute countdown with 50 minutes left (yes I timed it) just destroys its purpose.

I can't watch Armageddon, especially if I've been eating. I watched it the first time (only time all the way through?) with my first husband who's less than keen on critical thinking or science.

As I cringed and flinched at the butchery of all things science or logical on the screen, he chastised me for taking it too seriously. It's all in fun. Let it go. Even as they dodged meteoroids (which travel as fast as 70 km/s, hundreds of times as fast as a bullet) with their souped up Shuttle conveniently composed of titanium.

And even he turned to me and said, "You're right," when they escaped the Shuttle Bay via gattlin gun, a must on any extraterrestrial vehicle.

I've only seen it once, but it left a stain on my brain I still haven't managed to wipe clean.

The business term, Groupthink, is an extension of Orwell's "groupspeak". A scarier phrase from the book was the goal that O'Brien was after, "Doublethink" where a person could hold two conflicting ideas in their head simultaneously and believe both to be absolutely true. Unfortunately I'm seeing that a lot. Both in politics and with just general matters. It's impossible to talk to someone who both agrees and disagrees with something at the same time.

I've been caught up in a new anime recently so I haven't been keeping up with blogs. Too bad, because this is a great post.

I think you know I'll correct you if I think you're wrong or I see a different perspective. I certainly hope you'd do the same for me. I'd rather be corrected than be assumed right when I'm in error.

Your willingness to address controversial issues with your unique perspective is one of the reasons I read your blog, including older posts.

Ironically, though I've disagree with you and vice versa, we've never gotten nasty with each other. And, in fact, it rarely happens with any of the other thinkers I know about, even when we disagree. In my experience, the more knowledgeable people are, the less likely they are to resort to petty namecalling, fingerpointing and badmouthing.

Which says volumes about politics today.

By the way, I think "groupspeak" was coined by George Orwell in "1984" (Wikipedia agrees with me). There were quite a few other pertinent phrases from the book as well.

Believe it or not I've never heard any of Barney's songs. Being childless has pros and cons. I mark not knowing all of Barney's lyrics a pro.
As far as taking the basics and figuring out the advanced stuff its a social skills thing. There is a huge difference between rolling your eyes and saying "I think I got that." when being shown something with three other people, and going, "That's simple let's get started."
Even the school trouble makers know to wait for others to catch up.
Of course it could be that the rudest ones stand out in my memory.

My recently exed husband was homeschooled. Ironically, though public schooled, I consider myself one of those people that, if you tell them the basics, can figure out the advanced stuff. And I have nearly 30 years of experience that backs that thinking.

However, I also know from experience that that is a pretty rare trait. Shockingly so. And that most people look on people who can do that as freaks.

I do know plenty of people who THINK they can figure it out but don't have the critical thinking skills to pull it off so they often go in some whacked direction because they can't see the big picture.

Education and Religion don't have to be opposites.
The Catholic Church does promote science teaching and the Mormons boast of members who are scientists.
If either of those churches held the anti-science attitude of the Evangelicals, they wouldn't have any credibility at all.
